It’s done. I’ve officially stopped testing the waters and dived straight into starting a career as a Freelance Web Designer and owner of my own small business. Chris Laskey Design is corporation with a dashing young president (well, pending the paperwork going through).

That’s right baby, my days of freelance work are over before they ever started. I’m a corporate man now. It’s all powersuits from here on out. I’ve tasted the sweet nectar of upper management and I’m hooked.

Okay, okay, I’m kidding. Kind of.

Let’s start from the beginning. When I graduated from college in the spring of 2007 I had two degrees and no idea what direction to take my life. How’d I get into web design? Glad you asked.

Web design is simultaneously a new career and an old hat for me. I have been doing web design for the last 8 years, creating a new website at an approximate rate of one every month. But it took some time before it hit me to do Web Design as a career.

When I graduated, I had some ideas of what to do, but all I knew for sure was that getting to the next step in life meant getting organized. Really organized.

So I started to make lists, lots of lists. So many lists that if list making was a career, I’d be well on my way to becoming the CEO of a major list-making company. Of the cornucopia of lists I created, one of them was of new things I want to learn. Being a technology geek at heart, my list was full of entries that read “learn even more and become fluent in __ (insert PHP, MySQL, AS, JS, etc).”

It took a few more weeks, but one day while looking back at the list the light bulb finally went off. I was like Archimedes jumping out of the bath yelling Eureka (which is perfect tense meaning “I am in the present condition of having found it”. Did I mention one of my degrees was in Ancient Greek?). Except there wasn’t a bath involved, and I didn’t actually yell Eureka. But you get the picture. I looked at the list and it hit me, Web Design! I should do web design. After all, I love it and already spend long hours programming.

Fast forward 60-70 hours a week for over 6 months, and here we are, at the launch of Chris Laskey Design Inc. And truly I’ve loved every minute of it (well, except some moments with that old hag, Javascript).

So here’s to the future of my company, career, and design blog.

Cheers,

Chris

Oh, and the title isn’t a typo.
